Hardknocks School. (99)

The Kneebone Boy by Ellen Potter.

The royal portrait
of the deposed emperor,
Malkavian king.

This was a charming diversion. I generally don't care about the "bad things happen to dreary children" genre of books, but this is a lively tale filled with adventure, which redeems a lot of the cliches-- as does the tongue in cheek approach. The meta-textual asides are cute rather than distracting, & I was left grinning. Well played, Potter, +10 points for Gryffindor.
