How To Think Like a Homo Superior. (64)

How To Think Like a Neandertal by Thomas Wynn & Frederick Coolidge.

Dressed in golden paint,
the Karnak on the hill laughed,
raising the red rock.

I wrote my review of this book at Tor.com, so I don't really have a lot to say here. I will say, though, that the comments over there have been really intelligent so far. One of the things that is nice about having my subculture be the geek subculture is that the sort of brainy conversations about science can just spontaneously happen. It is part of the parlance of the community. You want to talk about the implausibility of a lightsaber from a physics standpoint? Fine by me, I'll talk about plasma loops held in place by a magnetic field. You want to debate the ontology of a transporter beam? Right on! So yes, I freely admit that a lot of my anthropology background informs my debate on the personhood of orcs. That is exactly parallel; it is no accident. My interests are all looped together like the Gordian Knot, all zig-zagging between each other like the Labyrinth of Minos. I give suggestions for a couple of books in the article; you can find most of them by flipping through my anthropology tag.
