"Then once by man and angels to be seen, In roaring he shall rise & on the surface die."
Did I mention that I wrote an article for Tor.com about Pathfinder? & did I mention that They Might Be Giant's song "Don't Let's Start" played at the restaurant on Valentine's Day? Well those are true stories of things that happened to me. Even more true was that yesterday was the Eleven-Books Club meeting for my pick, Kraken by China Miéville! Well, before hand I went to the gym-- I really had a heck of a workout there, too, congratulations animalcules!-- but there isn't much to say about that, so I'll skip it to get to the party! fordmadoxfraud was first, & I made him keep buying increasing amounts of ginger beer! I had gotten Kraken Black Spiced Rum in honor of the book & wanted to make dark & stormies, but the grocery store didn't have Good-o West Indian Ginger Beer ("It's Peppery!") so I was sort of freaking out. After David, it was littlewashu, all the way from the Southern Jungles of New Jersey. She was followed up by Carmen, & then blammo! It was after six, which meant it was go time! Apparently the trains were terrible; Beatrice showed up at half an hour past in a cab & poor Sherene came in last, soaking wet. There were a bunch of shrimp, a bunch of cheeses, phyllo shells with Nutella & whipped cream & fruit, pomegranate seeds, a nice spread. On the book, opinions were mixed, but generally positive-- Sherene loved it, Kerry & I both liked it, Jenny, Beatrice & David enjoyed it, & Carmen felt betrayed that it didn't live up to the promise of being squiddy, which is fair. We broke out a one to five scale, but I didn't think to record them-- we also retroactively gave grades to Novel with Cocaine & The Big Year, both of which I think averaged out to "two." Next book is Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, which I'm excited for, since I think I'll like it but it isn't the sort of book I would have come to on my own. Oh & Kerry picked her book for June, Michael Chabon's Yiddish Policemen's Union. Oh, we had a Twitter hashtag, #11bookclub, but the livetweeting didn't happen so much. After the meeting was over, we watched the movie for The Big Year, which was...fine? It wasn't any good but it wasn't terrible. My eyes didn't bleed.
